RESIN BOND Diamond and CBN wheels are used in a great many manufacturing processes. Diamond is used for grinding carbides and non-metallic materials while CBN is used to grind high speed steels and super alloys.
Basically, a grinding wheel is a tool holder. The tools are the crystals ( grains ) of abrasive embedded into a bond or matrix, which is supported by a core that fits the machine spindle. In a Diamond / CBN wheel the abrasive is confined to the rim.
Diamond / CBN content of a wheel is usually expressed in terms of concentration. A 100 concentration wheel contains 72 carats of Diamond / CBN abrasive per cubic inch of bond or 4.4 carats / cm3. A 50 concentration wheel Contains 36 carats per cubic inch or 2.2 carats cm3. Increasing the Diamond / CBN concentration of a wheel makes it act harder, it wears more slowly with more diamond crystals to share the work. To keep these wheels at full cutting efficiency the CBN or diamond wheel should periodically be dressed with an aluminum oxide dressing stick. The dressing stick removes the bond allowing the worn out Diamond or CBN to fall out and present fresh new Diamond / CBN grains.
